Funding rate
The periodic payment between long and short perpetual futures holders that keeps the contract price anchored to spot.
When the perp trades above spot, funding is positive and longs pay shorts; when it trades below, shorts pay longs. Rates are quoted per interval (often 8 hours, hourly on Hyperliquid) and annualise to meaningful numbers: 0.01 percent per 8 hours is about 11 percent a year.
Persistently high positive funding means the crowd is long and paying for it, which is a classic contrarian signal and a real carry cost. Funding divergence between exchanges can be arbitraged by going long on one and short on the other.
