Open interest
The total number of contracts outstanding that have not been settled or closed.
In prediction markets open interest shows how much money is committed to a question right now, as opposed to volume, which counts past trades. Rising open interest with a moving price means new positions are driving the move; falling open interest means positions are being closed.
In perpetual futures, open interest is a key crowding signal. When it builds quickly on one side, liquidations become more likely if price reverses, which is what liquidation heatmaps try to visualise.
BetG8's whale tracker and funding pages use open interest alongside funding rates to describe positioning.
