Hyperliquid vs Binance: fees, leverage and safety compared
A half basis point of fees, a passport, and who holds the keys: the real differences between the two venues.
Short version: Hyperliquid is a decentralised perpetuals exchange that runs its own blockchain; Binance is the largest centralised crypto exchange in the world. For a small or medium-sized perps trader outside the United States, Hyperliquid is slightly cheaper per trade (0.045% taker versus 0.05%, before discounts), needs no account or identity check, and lets you see every position on-chain, including the ones that get liquidated. Binance has roughly six times the futures volume, far deeper books on the top pairs, spot and fiat rails, up to 125x leverage and a roughly $1 billion insurance fund, in exchange for custody of your coins and a full KYC file. Neither accepts US residents. The rest of this page is the numbers, the two venues’ worst days, and which trader each one actually suits. Both links below are referral links; here is what that means.

What they are

Hyperliquid is a Layer-1 blockchain whose only job is to run an order-book exchange. Launched in 2023, it settles perpetual futures on more than 200 assets, plus spot and, since 2025, third-party “builder” markets under HIP-3 that trade things like gold and equity indices. Deposits are USDC bridged from Arbitrum. There is no company account: you sign transactions from your own wallet and your positions are public to anyone who looks them up, which is why our live whale tracker can exist at all. The protocol’s own market-making vault, HLP, takes the other side when books are thin and absorbs liquidations.

Binance is a centralised exchange founded in 2017, with spot, margin, USD-margined and coin-margined futures, options, earn products, a card and fiat on-ramps in most currencies. You deposit into Binance’s wallets, Binance holds the keys, and your balance is a database entry backed by the company’s proof-of-reserves reports. It is regulated, licensed or registered in a long list of countries and banned or restricted in others; in Europe it had not obtained a MiCA licence by the July 1, 2026 deadline that ended the transitional period in several member states.

Fees: the same $10,000 order on each

Both venues quote maker and taker fees as a percentage of notional, and both discount by 30-day volume. Hyperliquid’s entry tier is 0.015% maker and 0.045% taker; staking its HYPE token cuts those by 5% to 40% depending on how much you stake, and a referral code takes a further 4% off for your first $25 million of volume. Binance USD-M futures start at 0.02% maker and 0.05% taker, with 10% off when fees are paid in BNB; Binance spot is 0.1% each side, 25% off in BNB. Hyperliquid has no deposit fee and a flat 1 USDC withdrawal fee; Binance withdrawal fees vary by coin and network.

The honest summary is that the fee difference is small, about 10% to 15% in Hyperliquid’s favour for a retail taker, and it can flip for a high-volume maker on Binance’s VIP tiers. What costs most traders far more than either fee is funding and the spread they cross, and on those two the venues differ for structural reasons covered below. Our funding rate guide works through the arithmetic, and the funding and liquidation calculator lets you plug in your own position.

Liquidity and size

Binance is much bigger. Castle Labs’ perps dashboard for November 2, 2026 showed Binance futures turning over $44.92 billion in 24 hours against $7.13 billion on Hyperliquid, so the decentralised venue runs at about 16% of the centralised one. The picture inside DeFi is the reverse: Hyperliquid held $7.47 billion of open interest, about 57% of all on-chain perp open interest, and averaged $7.90 billion a day in September. Its blended take rate, fees as a share of volume, was about 2.6 basis points.

Listed perps200+ plus HIP-3 builder markets500+ USD-M and coin-M pairs
Max leverage40x on BTC, 3x to 25x on most altsUp to 125x on BTC, lower on alts

What that means in practice: on BTC and ETH you will not notice the difference on a five-figure order at either venue. On a mid-cap alt, Binance’s book is deeper and the spread tighter; on a new or long-tail token, Hyperliquid often lists first and Binance may not list at all. For very large orders Binance wins on depth, but Hyperliquid’s transparency is the reason size on it is so visible: the concentration of open interest in a few wallets is a published fact there and a guess everywhere else.

Custody, KYC and what you are trusting

This is the real difference, and fees are a footnote to it. On Binance your coins sit in Binance’s wallets. The company publishes proof-of-reserves snapshots, keeps an insurance fund (SAFU) that it has held at around $1 billion, and settled with the US Department of Justice in 2023 for $4.3 billion over compliance failures, after which its founder served a four-month sentence. You must complete identity verification before you can deposit, and Binance will freeze accounts when a court or regulator asks. If you lose your password, there is a support desk.

On Hyperliquid your USDC sits in a bridge contract and the exchange state lives on a chain run by a small validator set, which critics point out is far less decentralised than Ethereum. There is no KYC, no account to freeze and no support desk; if you lose your keys the money is gone. Positions, PnL and liquidation prices are public per wallet. Every trade settles on-chain, so the question “does the exchange actually have the money?” is answered by reading the chain rather than by trusting a PDF.

The worst days

Both venues have had them, and they tell you what kind of risk you are taking. Hyperliquid’s came in March 2025, when a trader opened a large short in the thin JELLY token, pushed the price against the position on other venues and left HLP holding a losing book; validators voted to delist the market and settle at a price that made the vault whole, which critics called exactly the kind of discretionary intervention a decentralised exchange is not supposed to have. On October 10, 2025, a market-wide crash liquidated billions across every venue, and Hyperliquid’s share was visible wallet by wallet in real time, which looked bad and was also the point. Binance’s worst days are a longer list: the 2019 hot-wallet hack of 7,000 BTC, repaid from SAFU; the 2023 DOJ settlement; and on that same October 10, 2025, a rush of complaints about stale oracle prices and depegged collateral during the cascade, for which Binance later announced compensation to affected users. The pattern is the one you would expect: the decentralised venue’s failures are about thin markets and governance, the centralised venue’s are about the company itself.

Who should use which

Hyperliquid suits a trader who already holds stablecoins on-chain, wants perps on new tokens quickly, values not handing over a passport, is comfortable with self-custody and wants to see what the biggest accounts are doing. It is also the better venue for anyone who trades enough that the fee gap compounds: 0.045% versus 0.05% is $5,000 a year on $10 million of taker volume, before the HYPE staking and referral discounts widen it. Binance suits a trader who starts from fiat, wants spot, futures and earn products in one account, trades size on the top pairs where depth matters more than a half-basis-point fee, and prefers an exchange with a help desk and a regulator somewhere to a smart contract with neither. Plenty of people use both: Binance for the on-ramp and the big liquid pairs, Hyperliquid for the perps and the transparency. If you take the referral discounts into account, Hyperliquid is the cheaper of the two for almost every retail trader; whether that saving is worth self-custody is the decision only you can make.

How to open an account

On Hyperliquid: connect a wallet (MetaMask, Rabby, or an exchange withdrawal to an Arbitrum address), enter the code BETG8 on the referral page before your first trade, deposit USDC on Arbitrum, and set leverage per market before you open a position. The 4% discount applies automatically to your first $25 million of volume. On Binance: register with our link, complete identity verification, deposit by card, bank or crypto, enable futures trading separately (it is off by default and includes a short quiz), and turn on BNB fee payment in settings for the 10% discount. Whatever you choose, start with leverage you could survive being wrong about: our calculator shows how far price has to move to liquidate you at each level.

Method and limits

Fee schedules are the published entry-tier rates on each exchange’s fee page as of November 4, 2026 and change without notice; VIP tiers, staking discounts and promotional rates are not modelled beyond the first discount. Volume and open interest are from Castle Labs’ perpetuals dashboard for November 2, 2026. Jurisdiction restrictions are from each venue’s terms of service and the FCA’s May 2026 warning list. BetG8 earns referral commission from both exchanges; that does not change the fee you pay. This is a comparison of products, not investment, trading or legal advice, and leveraged trading can lose more than your deposit on Binance and your whole margin on either venue.

Frequently asked questions

Is Hyperliquid cheaper than Binance for perpetual futures?

At the entry tier, Hyperliquid charges 0.045% taker and 0.015% maker, so a $10,000 market order costs about $4.50 before discounts, or $4.32 with a referral code. Binance USD-M futures charge 0.05% taker and 0.02% maker, about $5.00 for the same order, or $4.50 if you pay fees in BNB. Hyperliquid is cheaper by roughly 10 to 15% for small takers; the gap narrows for large accounts and heavy BNB holders, and Binance makers with volume tiers can get below either.

Can US residents use Hyperliquid or Binance?

No. Hyperliquid’s terms exclude US persons and residents of Ontario, among other places, and the UK FCA issued a warning about the venue in May 2026. Binance.com does not accept US customers; Americans are directed to Binance.US, a separate company with a smaller product list and no perpetual futures. This article is written for readers outside the United States.

Which has more liquidity?

Binance. Castle Labs’ data for November 2, 2026 put Binance futures at $44.92 billion of 24-hour volume against Hyperliquid’s $7.13 billion, about 16%. Hyperliquid dominates on-chain perps with $7.47 billion of open interest, about 57% of the on-chain total, but on the biggest pairs Binance’s order book is still several times deeper.

Do I need KYC?

Hyperliquid has no account, no identity check and no deposit limit: you connect a wallet, bridge USDC to Arbitrum and trade. Binance requires full identity verification before deposits, and it has used that record to freeze accounts in response to law-enforcement requests. Which of those you prefer is a question of what you are protecting against.

What is the Hyperliquid referral code BETG8?

Entering BETG8 at app.hyperliquid.xyz/join/BETG8 before your first trade gives a 4% discount on trading fees for your first $25 million of volume. BetG8 receives a share of the fees Hyperliquid collects from referred accounts. It does not change spreads, funding or anything else about execution.
