Geofence

Technology that blocks or permits access to a service based on the user's physical location.

BetG8 Editorial · Reviewed November 6, 2026 · Not betting, legal or investment advice

Prediction market apps check location at sign-up and before trades, using IP address, device GPS and ID documents. Kalshi and Polymarket US block states where a court order applies, and the offshore Polymarket blocks the whole United States. VPN use breaches the terms of service and, for the offshore site, a CFTC order.

Because venues update geofences faster than courts rule, the geofence is the real answer to "can I use it here today." BetG8's state pages report both the legal position and the latest availability information.

Geofencing is also why identical markets can show different prices across venues: the pools of traders are different people.
