Cease-and-desist letter
A formal demand from a state regulator that a company stop an activity, in this context offering sports or election contracts to that state's residents.
Since early 2025 more than a dozen state gaming regulators have sent cease-and-desist letters to Kalshi, Robinhood, Crypto.com and later Polymarket US. The letters assert that event contracts on sports are unlicensed sports betting under state law.
A letter is not a court order. Kalshi responded by suing several states in federal court for an injunction, with mixed results: wins in New Jersey at the district level, losses in Nevada and Maryland on appeal.
BetG8 tracks every letter, suit and ruling by state. The practical question for a resident is whether the app still works where they live, which depends on the venue's geofence, not the letter alone.
