Kalshi minimum age and ID verification: what you need to sign up, and what changes if you are 18 to 20

Guide · Updated October 29, 2026 · 18+ · Not legal, tax or financial advice · By · Prediction Markets

Kalshi minimum age and ID verification
Short answer: You must be 18 to open a Kalshi account. Sign-up asks for your full name, date of birth, phone number and address, which a third-party vendor checks automatically; a passport, driver’s licence, Social Security number or live selfie is requested only if that check fails or a risk flag is raised. Since late October 2026, traders aged 18 to 20 get a default deposit cap of $2,500 a month. Most US sportsbooks require 21, which is why age is one of the main arguments states make against prediction markets. Figures are as of October 2026.

Age is the simplest rule on Kalshi and one of the most contested. A CFTC-regulated exchange sets its own eligibility rules, and Kalshi’s is 18, the age at which you can open a brokerage account. State sportsbook laws mostly say 21. This guide explains what Kalshi actually checks when you sign up, what triggers a document request, the extra limits on younger traders, and why the age gap keeps appearing in state enforcement actions.

The minimum age is 18

Kalshi’s help centre lists one eligibility condition first: applicants must “be 18 years or older.” Its identity verification automatically rejects anyone under 18, and the company describes keeping minors off the platform as a top priority. There is no separate age for different contract types: an 18-year-old can trade economics, weather, politics and sports contracts on the same terms as anyone else, subject to the state restrictions described below.

Polymarket US, the other large CFTC-regulated venue, also accepts users from 18. The licensed sportsbooks in most states do not. A handful of jurisdictions, including Washington DC, New Hampshire and Kentucky, allow sports betting from 18, and both New Hampshire and Kentucky have rejected attempts to raise the age to 21.

What Kalshi asks for at sign-up

The process has four stages. First you verify an email address or sign in with Google or Apple, which Kalshi says is meant to stop fake and automated accounts. Second you enter profile details. Third a third-party identity vendor checks them and returns one of three outcomes: accept, reject or refer for manual review. Fourth, accepted applicants are screened against watchlists of politically exposed persons and people barred from trading on federal exchanges because of sanctions or legal issues. No trading is allowed until all of that is complete.

ItemWhen it is required
Email, or Google/Apple sign-inAlways
Full name, date of birth, phone number, addressAlways
Government ID (passport or driver’s licence)If the automatic check cannot confirm you, or a risk check is triggered
Social Security numberMay be requested as additional evidence
Live selfie with government IDSign-ups that trigger risk checks, and higher-risk accounts
Watchlist screeningAlways, after identity is confirmed

The help centre advises that accurate, current information avoids delays, and says that if more is needed the email you receive will set out the next steps. It gives no standard processing time.

If verification fails

A rejected applicant can still log in, but Kalshi’s customer identification page says they are “blocked from all user functions and trading privileges.” Applications the automatic system cannot decide go to compliance staff, who compare whatever extra evidence you provide with the details you entered and either approve the account or ask for more. The most common practical causes of a referral are mismatches: a nickname instead of a legal name, an old address, or a phone number registered to someone else.

Kalshi also runs an ID Check tool, now featured on its homepage, that lets an adult see whether anyone has opened an account using their identity. It is aimed at parents worried that a teenager has used their details, and it is the main safeguard against the one route around an 18-plus rule that automatic checks cannot see.

Extra limits for traders aged 18 to 20

On October 27, 2026 Kalshi announced added protections for its youngest adult users. As of that announcement:

Every account also has trading breaks, self-set limits and self-exclusion, Face ID by default on supported devices and two-factor authentication.

A worked example

Take a 19-year-old who opens an account on the first of the month and wants to deposit $3,000. Under the default cap only $2,500 can go in that month; the remaining $500 waits until the next. Suppose the balance after some trading is $2,000 and they try to put $600 into one contract. That is 30 percent of the balance, above the 25 percent threshold, so they see a diversification alert. At 50 cents a contract, $600 buys about 1,200 contracts before fees; Kalshi’s fee formula and the cost at different prices are set out in our fee guide. A 25-year-old making the same trade would see the alert but face no deposit cap. Neither limit stops the trade itself.

Why age keeps coming up in state cases

Because licensed sportsbooks in most states require 21, a sports contract on Kalshi is open to people the state’s own sportsbooks must turn away. Several states have used that gap: Missouri’s cease-and-desist letters demanded that platforms stop serving residents under 21, New Mexico’s tribes put the age difference at the centre of their injunction request, and the NFL’s Supreme Court brief asked for a 21-plus floor. Where the local betting age is already 18, as in DC, the argument does not apply. The state-by-state position, including where Kalshi’s sports contracts are blocked entirely, is in our legality tracker.

What this guide does not cover

It does not cover tax identification: if Kalshi issues you a tax form it will need your taxpayer details, which our 1099 guide explains. It does not cover international eligibility; Kalshi says it is accessible in many countries but restricts some jurisdictions, listed in its Member Agreement. And it does not cover joint, business or trust accounts, which have separate onboarding. Rules can change; check Kalshi’s help centre before relying on any figure here. This is not legal, tax or financial advice.
